As I wrote in another message that "Band In A Box 2007" could transcribe chord progressions from Wav and MP3 files, I would have thought that this may have been imposable, well it is not. My inquiry is there a reliable soft ware program or piece of Hardware that can remove the vocal from wav or MP3 files. I have tried a few programs it is not very successful as it deterrents the music and leaves a reveb vocal still in the background. I have successfully removed on a few numbers the lead vocal and not affected the music or the backing vocal but very few. If "Band In A Box" has the intelligence to sort out the chords from a complex piece of music with many instruments playing, surely there must be some thing out there that can do it, just as I also believe that Wav files can be converted to Midi files, that is complex Wav files, it is possible for single instruments. Well thats food for thought, I hope some one can shine some light on these thoughts. Interested to hear any feed back.
Regards Denis

Sorry Denis, There's no such thing as a "vocal remover" that won't change and, most likely, ruin the sonic qualities of the audio file. It's just the physics of sound, they "remove" the vocal by taking out anything in the mid-range that's panned to the center. Determining chords and analysing sound to find the dominant frequencies is a totally different sphere of audio science and has been around for a long time, just ask the human-ear. As for audio to midi converters... with a monophonic signal they nearly work, with a complex sound source like a stereo wave file it's just another area where computer science hasn't got a chance, maybe one day we'll have pc's that can tell the difference between the breath sound on a sax and a hi-hat hit but I doubt that it'll be anytime soon.

Hi Dennis
Before I discovered Midi, I once bought a programme (cant remember the name of it) which reconed it could remove the vocal track. I thought it was the answer to my dreams. I tried it and guess what?, total garbage.
The vocals were still there, albeit distorted, and the rest of the track was indistinguishable as the original song.

These programs should be filed next to the wav to midi converters......in the TRASH.

Guys and Gals,
As was previously stated there is no effective way to remove the vocal yet...But, who knows what the future may bring, even converting WAV to MIDI.

of course it's physically impossible to remove vocals - well you you can remove the frequencies of the vocal but you also remove the frequencies of whatever other instruments fall in that range - the result is rubbish! OR go buy a karaoke track
