Hello all. I've been using Winzip 7 to open zip files, but I've run across a problem.
A lot of the zip files in the download area won't open and Winzip gives me the error message as the "file is invalid or corrupt". At least this is how it behaves on my computer.
I would appreciate it if anyone could make a recommendation on another Zip program that might be better to use and where to get it.
Thanks for your help.

I have been using a program called 7 zip which is free and is located at this link:http://www.download.com/7-Zip/3000-2250_4-10539225.html?tag=lst-0-1 or go to download.com and enter 7-zip in the search bar at the top. I hope that works. I was using the free trial of winzip 10 until the free 45 day trial ended. So far I have been happy with 7 zip and have not encountered any problems. It opens most everything and seems to do it faster. The interface ( what you see and how you interact with the program) may take a little getting used to, but works well. If you do download it and install the program, when you have a zipped file just right click select 7 zip and then your choice of unzip to here or you can select another location. If you choose to unzip to a specific location there will be a little box on the right hand side with little dots. If you click on this little square it will allow you to browse your computer and select the location that you desire.

Another program is winrar, opens (and closes) .zip .rar and .cab files....can't recall where I got mine sorry but a search should at least turn up a trial version...works a treat.

You can find winrar at download.com as well. www.download.com/WinRAR/3000-2250_4-10614813.html?tag=lst-0-1It is free to try, $29.00 to buy. I have winrar as well, it is good but I think it is more for developers. It has a great compression rate but no virus protection. It is also slower on decompression (unzipping).

Just thought I'd let you know that WinZip 7.0 has been working like a charm. I haven't so far (fingers crossed) had any problem opening up the zip files.
Thanks Everyone! (And special thanks to ironbaden!)

Hi I use TugZip - mainly because I use all sorts of Windows, Mac and Linux extraction files - It is free and can be found at www.tugzip.com/Rockabilly

I use Winrar too and have had no problems with it. I think I originally got it from download.com, but I'm not sure. Jan (Keeko)
