Hi thingyy, I used to end my gigs with 'Wonderful tonight'. After a while I quit doing that. I replaced it with an Elvis up-tempo number called 'Such A Night'. So my ending bit goes something like this...."Well, we want to thank everybody for coming out tonight..we're called "Up All Nite", we hope you had a 'good night' we're going to say 'goodnite' ...because it has been 'Such a night'...(cue song)..."it was a night...oooh what a nite it was...it really was such a night...." It works really good and leaves them wanting more. Oh yeah, I hardly every play "Wonderful tonight' unless its requested. civicman

hi pmalcom For people who want to get up and sing I've tried suggesting the karaoke bar. They seem to take it as an insult. I guess they assume they are above the karoake crowd. So now I don't make any excuses--I just say no. Sometimes if they get bilegerent I tell them its my gig, go get your own gig and don't use me as a 'means to further your ends'. I just feel that the club is paying me to sing and not this fool who wants to impress his friends. However, if it is the boss's girlfriend who wants to sing thats a different story. civicman

Great thread. I've been gigging for over fifteen years. The punters are a funny bunch. I have played one night and have gone down a storm, people dancing, cheering, slapping you on the back, etc. Played the next night, and nothing....no clapping, eye contact....nothing....cold, cold, cold. Point - do not take failed gigs personally. OK, if every gig you do is a cold one, perhaps you ought to get another job ;-)
If I am in a cold one, I always glance at people's feet - ARE THEY TAPPING? If yes, then you're doing OK, even if they are not responding. Be brave, keep smiling and keep going. You will get your money, and more than likely the manager will surprisingly say "that was great, can we book you again?" Nick

I mainly gig at assisted living facilties and nursing homes and such. The "patrons" are appreciative and, well, a lot of em don't know if you play the same song over and over again! (Only kidding, but, sadly, in some cases it is true... Actually, I get a great deal of satisfaction from doing this type of thing..
