Hello Everyone How many of you have all your teeth ? How many of you have partial fixed false teeth ? How many of you have removable dentures ? No, friends this isn't a survey by Colgate !!! ;D I had four front teeth replaced with ceramic teeth and I think I can smile confidently. I had about three grinders removed and some root canal done on a few. All of us have dental hassles and it would be educating and interesting to know experiences from our Senior Citizens. On a lighter vein, I often tell "fans" who ask me about my "powerful" voice, that I have "hollows" in my teeth to give me that resounding quality !!!! ;D S M I L E, friends and lets hear your experiences.

Hi Shyam, Here's another strange thread and no mistake! How do you think 'em up? All me own mate. One big 'un near the back removed about 6 years ago. It had a filling from the late 1950's and eventually the tooth split. Similar one on t'other side, also filled in the 50s has a gold crown. And that's it. A distinctly lopsided grin but all me own gnashers. I put it down to riotous living, a bad diet, and plenty of "you know what"! Hee, hee! ;D JohnG.

Great question, Shyam.
My two front teeth are crowns.
I was head-butted when I was 12, (38 years ago) this is when we lived in Brixton, London. Anyway, my two front, upper teeth turned a very dark grey. When I was 16 I had them cut down near to the root and new, false ones were cemented in their place.
I have also had my wisdom teeth removed, plus a few others that were causing me untold misery. ;d

Well Shyam, you didn't ask if dentures would affect your singing in your first post, that's why you didn't get a response regarding that.
In 'real life' I was a Registered Dental Assistant if that makes a dif. LOL!
Any change in your entire mouth, be it getting orthodontic braces as a kid, or full dentures later on in life will affect your singing, but ONLY for a short time! There is an adjustment period you will have to go through. You will have to deal with the healing process of tooth extraction for one. In the beginning, the dentures will feel bulky and out of place and may affect your speech some. The reason for this is that the entire upper palate is covered in a layer of acrylic 'gums'. Your tongue and lips will eventually get used to the new positioning and soon you will be speaking and singing like normal.
The key to dentures is that they fit snugly and properly. You should not have to use any of that goopy garbage they sell, unless you simply have no bone structure to support dentures, (meaning if you have a very flat pallate and no ridge where the natural teeth used to be.) If you have a skilled dentist and lab tech who makes your dentures things will go pretty smoothly.
You should also not have any areas on the denture that cause soreness or cause any pressure marks or sores in your mouth. If that happens a trip to the dentist is in order do he can smooth that area of the denture down a bit.

I was head-butted when I was 12, (38 years ago) this is when we lived in Brixton, London. I would'nt say you'll be the last to lose teeth in Brixton pat!! ;D ;D Funnily enough i too have 3 crowns at the front, (a result of playing rugby League as a youth for Featherstone Rovers). A fella i know had falsies put in a couple of years ago, granted he looked like Cilla Black at first, (and strangely enough sang like her too, whether that was the teeth or the undersized denims he wore i never quite fathomed). After they wore in a bit he had no problems, in fact he got a lot of bookings, a "Lorra Lorra" bookings. (sorry, can't get the Cilla Black thing out of my head). ;D tubbs......sitting in the corner waiting for George to bring the tea and biscuits....

Ok all I'll admit to having partial plates. I wear the bottom one but the top one is nearly still brand new, and it's about 9 years old. As it doesn't seem to make much difference to my mouth I feel more comfortable with it out. The bottom one has no effect on my singing. Is that info of any help Shyam? Cheers Lyn

Jazzcat, YOU ARE TRULY AMAZING !!!! What is it that you aren't good at or is there anything you dont know ? Thanks a lot ........it really was useful info. No, I havent gone in for dentures but the dentist told me I might need to put in two "removable" teeth in my lower gum, so I was worried about this. I must admit I'm rather scared of the thought of any temporary fitting coming off when I'm singing and I'm sure I'll hate taking it out each night. I hope I can stay safe for a while longer. By the way, does Willie Nelson have all his teeth ? I need inspiration ! Name some singers who sing through their dentures......... give me hope ...............lol

Well don't worry about it. You will get used to it. It will snap into place and it will be snug. Over time it probably will loosten up but you should be able to have it adjusted occasionally, and replaced when it just wears out. You could consider the much more expensive alternatitve, a fixed bridge. Then you probably wouldn't have any trouble with it for many many years to come, if ever.
Keep in mind, having a skilled dentist doing the prep and a skilled lab making the partial or bridge has a lot to do with things working out right. As a dental assistant I am really picky and will gripe immediatly if something's not right, but then I know how it should be done <smile>
As for full dentures, well my mom had to get full dentures at 16 years old and her profession in her 20's was being a drummer. Usually being the only girl in the band she would wind up having to sing, even though she wasn't much of a vocalist. No one ever knew she had them and she never spit them out across the dance floor LOL!
