i gets my power back last nite.... and plug everything back in... I had unplugged everything when i heard we were having an electrical storm.... I plug in the internet. ( i have cable Broadband) and it say's i'm on line...but i can't connect. long story short. internet box is blown. how can this be i think to my self.... it was unplugged..... well..... you also have to disconnect the " cable " plug from the box. I had unplugged the power... disconnected the modem from the pc... but never even considered the cable coming from the telephone pole to the modem box. a surge ran thru it and blew it out. ... Today's lesson Kids...... unplug all connections to the outside world during an electrical storm!!

Or get a surge protection multi box with phone jack protection. Ask you telephone company why there a no fuses or arresters installed on the phone line as it is common practice in area where open lines are to have protection against power surges and lightning strikes. If a power line breaks or makes contact with the phone lines it can be fatal for the subscriber and telephone repair man.

By the way they have fuses installed in the exchange on the end of each pair of wires to protect the phone companies equipment.

How does a power surge get into a 50volt telephone cable ? You can get surge protection for your phone socket. Mine is combined with power sockets on a surge protection multi box.

Similar kind of problem here. I had a power outage without warning so nothng was unplugged! Since the power came back on my LAN connection keeps saying "network cable unplugged" even though it isn't! Had to switch my DSL to USB connection to get back on line!

It's been my experience that a surge protector gives you a false sense of security - especially with surges caused by electrical storms - generally pack enough wallop to completely overwhelm and fry the surge protector then continuing through to the 'protected' equipment. I myself use an offline UPS - adds greater protection in my opinion,
