It seems many of you are using MP3 players, MDs and Laptops to back up your singing, but I always thought you used guitars and keyboards to actually play on stage adding to the backing of the machines. Really, really, really tut tut guys !!!!!! What are you musicians doing on stage ? Playing Air Guitar or Air Keyboards or Air Sax or just twiddling your thumbs ? P L A Y SOMETHING FELLAS ..... DONT JUST STAND THERE CURLING YOUR FINGERS !!!!!Dearest Glenn, you need to stop supplying MP3s.Admitted - we are Karaoke artistes but ..... please, cant we atleast play the chords on our guitars and keyboards ? We are musicians, after all, aren't we ? Sob sob sob ............ Uploading a video tomorrow of how us "Pro's Do it!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure where you're going with this post. Whats the difference between a singer standing in front of a band performing the backing or standing in front of a machine playing the backing! The singer is still going to sing regardless of what is playing the music.

Agreed! I spent a good part of my career running around stages with just my voice as an instrument... I sometimes forgot to tune it up before the gig but that's a whole other thread! With today's technology and audiences almost anything is possible... I've actually seen punters standing in front of a video screen, rocking out as if they're at the concert being shown on MTV! Remember, with art, it's all in the mind; the mind decides what it is and the eyes and ears follow! That's how we get away with impersonating other artists and bands. BTW, the only time I recall twiddling my thumbs on stage was when we had a demented German heavy-metal guitarist in the band, his aim was to use every note on the fretboard regardless of the key! lol... we still love ya, Joshi!

Gosh I think I struck the wrong note there. SORRY EVERYONE !!! Steptoe (John) is right when he says the singer is going to sing regardless of whats playing the music. Thats very true, John - its eventually how the singer comes across with his voice. Most of us - maybe all of us here are musicians and I just feel its nice to see a musician actually play something along with the "BAND in the machine. My apologies if I've over reacted.

hhhmmmm lol lol not sure either were this 1`s going i would presume if we`re all playing then we don`t need to use `files`depends which way your band is heading i`m a drummer by trade but ill health forced me to give drums up so now i `play keyboards`now when i say play i transpose my keyboard so that i`m playing in a major key i don`t play middle eights i leave that to `midimart`lol lol but i manage to give a good account of myself i have never thought of myself as an `air player`. However i`m still unclear in what you mean perhaps a little more explanation would help Anyway my very best regards

H E L P !!!! MODERATORS !!!! I started this all and I tread on everyone's toes !! I was only talking about singers who sang using midi players, MD players, cd players etc etc and who did not play any imusical instrument. Everyone who has reacted to this are "pucca" musicians, genuine musicians who actually play with these backing tracks. I use Midis on my keyboard and play along too while singing. Gosh guys, I'm sorry if you misunderstood me. Honestly. Now can we treat this subject as closed ............please.

No need for apologies Shyam.........you've just hit a few members with a dose of reality. The easy way isn't always the best way. It's the "air" guitarists and "air" keyboard players out there that make the punters skeptical about whether anything coming out of the speakers is live or simply mimed.
BTW. I was at a gig about 15 years ago watching some duo's 1st set. Great sounds and solo's by the guitarist. Excellent quality backing tracks. I go closer for a good look and notice that he's forgotten to plug the lead into his guitar and hasn't realized. It was pointed this out to him during his break by another punter. He was extremely embarrassed. You could see this guy could play but chose to mime the entire gig for some reason and it went horribly wrong.

Guilty, thanks for your kind words but I really was "flakked" and I'm still spinning with the outburst. Like you, I have seen quite a few of these incidents and I am upset that I have been misunderstood.

[/quote Hi, I have worked in the music business for 31 years, playing in all kinds of bands from 20 pce big bands to solo piano, The thing is promoters today will not pay a large band yet people expect the same sound, It would be impossible to produce the required standard of music without first laying down Bass,Drums,Strings, Brass ETC, A lot of the files I use (and to the best of my knowledge most members of this forum) I make myself, I also use some of the excellent Midi Mart files. Far from "TWIDDLING MY THUMBS" I play over the backing track. I will use backing tracks until such time as I can grow another set of hands. Regards Larry (larryc) A.R.C.M

Hi Shyam Don`t think you`ve trod on anybody`s toes i think you just presented your point a little wrongly but i`m sure none of us took any offense certainly not me anyway.
Like Larry i have been in this business a long time [42 years this year ] time for a walking stick or a zimmer frame lol lol and i have played in some very tasty bands but as Larry says the clubs won`t pay the money now but still want a full backing sound hence files
As i come towards the retirement thing i see this as the icing on my cake now with technology i have been able to keep my career going and like Larry until i can find new hands i`ll keep on using `midimart international`But please once again don`t think you have trod on my toes
Very Kind Regards
George (weegeo)

I'm sure that Larry's post is exactly what Shyam was talking about in his original post. Using backing tracks and playing your instrument. I don't think Shyam suggested we shouldn't use technology.
Everyone is a little touchy about this subject aren't they.

Dear Shyam, Nobody is mad at you! You just worded your original post wrongly. When you said, " It seems many of you are using MP3 players, MDs and Laptops to back up your singing, but I always thought you used guitars and keyboards to actually play on stage adding to the backing of the machines. Really, really, really tut tut guys !!!!!! What are you musicians doing on stage ? Playing Air Guitar or Air Keyboards or Air Sax or just twiddling your thumbs ?" it sounds like you're accusing a lot of people of just singing along to midi or mp3s. Whenever you use a generality like "many of you" people will feel you mean them personally and, obviously, some members are sensitive on this subject because it sometimes happens to them at gigs. Punters come up to ask if they're really playing or miming etc and it drives them crazy. We've had a whole thread on this some time ago. Your meaning has sort of become clearer as members have explained that they still play along with their mp3s or midis. I just assumed that you used your keyboard as a player and hadn't grasped that the laptops and MD players are used in the same way as your keyboard player. In any event, it's nothing to worry about. I personally appreciate your contributions to the board so take heart and have a lovely time meditating in the mountains (joke)!!! Keep posting, mate, Dave.
