What do the rest of you think of shows like the x factor, american idol, etc.? I personally like them and there is some seriously unknown talent out there!!! If i,m out gigging i even get the wife to text me the result later on that night. Have i lost my marbles, or is there place for these shows nowadays? ;D

Hi Tubbs. No you haven't lost your marbles as I love these types of shows too. There surely are some very impressive performers out there. I hate my social life when these types of shows are on. Don't like to miss 'em either. Regards Lyn

The only trouble with these shows is after about 2 years the winners dissappear. G4 Recently split up. Steve Brookstein has vanished. They dont seem to have the staying power of the the artists who have come up through the working mens clubs and have learnt their craft the hard way. Will Young and Lemar seems to be the only survivors of these shows . saying all this the shows do have entertainment value.

Hiya Mark you have hit the nail on the head these are entertainment shows who in their right mind stands up in front of a load of ppl just to be knocked down.No doubt there are some very good acts that come out of the show/s but as already said were do they go?? once the record companies have had their xmas no1 they just seem to vanish unlike i`m sure most of the good ppl on this forum that have all served their time in the clubs making a very good living, and another thing i can`t quite get lol lol wats the `x factor` anyway i`ve performed in front of very large crowds and quite a few small 1`s i always got paid and asked back does that mean i`ve the `x factor` lol lol AAww well just a few little thoughts

Yeah i have to admit that not too many of the winners stay the distance, in the past few years i always thought the best acts never won.

I'm a fan of these. Sometimes they get it right but usually they get it wrong. Of course if any of you remember Opportunity Knocks with the late great Hughie Green you will have to agree it was a great place for upcoming talent. Anyone remember Bernie Flint? Thought not

I'm also addicted to watching these types of shows... Gawd, Pat, Opportunity Knocks is showing your age (and mine)! The whole family used to love sitting around the living-room, watching that show... Hughie Green was a master of what must have been the birth of Reality TV! Who IS Bernie Flint? My biggest gripe is that the current crop of "talent shows" (Idol/X-Factor etc) usually end up as more of a popularity contest than a singing contest. I still favour the school-of-hard-knocks approach for up and coming musicians and singers, get out and gig... that's where you really find out what it's all about. I always tell newbies, anyone that asks my advice, that one gig is worth weeks of practice, what do you think?

That's a great article on Showbiz (talent versus sex-appeal)... my sentiments exactly. God knows, I'd be a megastar by now if I looked like... well, not really! I always think of myself as a musician first; my goal is to be the best musician I can be and even today, after decades in the business and thousands of gigs, I still practice and do vocal exercises 6 days a week (some would say I need to!) just so I continue learning and growing. One of my favourite quotes regarding singing comes from Maestro Alan Lindquist: “I am reminded today of a statement made by a famous singer of the last generation. I refer to the fabulous baritone, Battistini, who at the age of 74, on his death bed, said, "How I wish I had another life in which to further study the glorious art of singing. There is so much more to learn." That is exactly how I feel at the same age as that master singer.” Inspirational stuff and a LONG way from the current trend of marketing singers as sex-symbols! P.S. It's just great to see that Bernie Flint is alive and doing well, God Bless him! Cheers, Dave.
