Tyrone sometime you will get the odd trouble maker but it's rare these days because most people know that bands use some kinda additional backing when gigging. As long as they don't think you're miming/syncing the vocals.

I've been using backing tracks for nearly 20 yrs and still get asked/told about miming guitar and vocals. "Where's the drummer" is another common question. It does get tiring so usually reply "Yes mate......it's all mimed". They give me a funny look but get the hint. If only people realized how hard it is to lip-sync etc.

The question I normally get is where's the drummer? They never ask where is the bass player or where is the string section or the brass section etc etc. Usually by the same type of person in each club. I usually reply 'you pay the extra money and we'll bring him along next time!'

yeah, we get the same thing..."where's the drummer?" So, we made a cardboard cut-out of Ringo Starr and place it directly behind us while we're gigging. Most folks get the message, some though look at us and say "you're not The Beatles"....and we say "wow, how did you figure that out?" lol

Oh Ho, so its the same scenario in your parts of the world too !! Some call us a Karaoke Band !! Some come close to us to actually see whether we are singing !! No one has asked where the drummer was but if they do I'll keep that line ready lol. Many a time I've been told that they thought a CD player was put on and they couldnt believe I was actually singing. I guess I should take it as a compliment, but I'm really not so sure. Why cant they just accept the fact that I have a BAND in my keyboard and the band has actually been "trained" (edited is the right word !!!!) by me and MidiMart !! I have no egoistic guitarists in my band, no drunken drummers - its just my "well practised" band and mysaelf ! Yes and this is me singing and if you cant believe it, stand in front of me and you'll be "sprayed to the truth" Long live my "band" and long live ,MidiMart !!! Yodellllaaaahhhhheeeeeeeehhooooo !

I live in the very VERY north of Ireland and I play in the local hotel....there is a two piece that 'play' there some nights and its a disgrace what they get away with...She sings and he 'plays' a ( rather jumps about and fiddles buttons and knobs on the pa system )......what we call...A HANDS FREE KEYBOARD....lolol.....and yes would you believe it......they HAVE a screen in front of them for the karaoke lyrics.....but the funniest thing about them is...THAT NEARLY ALL THE BACKING TRACKS FADE OUT.....lolololol

A few years ago a fella was playing keyboards and singing in the local pub where i lived, during a song when it came to the instrumental part he went down and ordered himself a pint and just made it back when the lyrics started again!!!
Oddly enough no one asked him was he playing live!!! (ha ha).
I think if it sounds good and you get em out dancing no one with a brain cares if you use partial backing.
YOU CAN,T PLEASE EM ALL!!!

Same thing here with me...but something else that "bugs" me...when I am doing a sound test before starting, and usually say "check one, two", or something along those lines...and you hear"three, four..or "cant you count any further"...so Ive started to use this response... "There are three types of people...Intelligent,stupid, and average. The average person will make that remark...so you should b pleased to know that you are just "average"... usually shuts them up.

We get around that one by just talking into the mic - nothing specific. It works just as well as counting, or having a stock phrase.
