Talking about funny requests, these two still make me smile when I think about them.
My friend Jack is a fabulous blues singer and harmonica player of many years, and at the time, we went to see him and his band when they had a residency at one of the top blues clubs in Johannesburg - very swanky. Anyway during the break, a woman came up to the table and asked if he would play "long haired lover from Liverpool - you know, the one by little Jimmy Osmond". To his credit, Jack was as gracious as ever, but declined - and never mentioned it again.
The other one was another friend who used to play one man gigs - rather folky and irish influenced. I though I had heard his entire repertoire, when out of the crowd one drunken Friday night came: "Can you play Rawhide?" To my surprise (and the rest of the table) - he did! - and really well!

Two wonderful stories. I love the "Rawhide" one. My brother Liam, another musician [guitar] and singer, use to do this song with a band he played with many years ago. I personally love the Blues Brothers version

I did a gig a while back and there were a few really 'street' black guys there who looked sooo out of place. Well this 6ft plus black guy comes over to me and says he wants to sing. Ok says i, what do you want to do? 'Radiohead' he said over the noise, i start digging out my Radiohead tracks and asked him if he'd like to do Street Spirit or Karma Police He looks at me really funny and says........'Na mate ...lady in red' i am staring at this guy ......6 ft plus ....total gangsta rap thing going on and he wants to sing Chris De Burgh. Un.bloody ..believable Needless to say i told him to bugger off and get a life. Chris de Burgh indeed......

That reminds me of something I heard a couple of years ago on a visit to the UK. We were at a Karaoke night in the local (in the north-east - need I say more).
Any this young guy got up - he was HUGE - upwards and outwards. Remember the song 'Star trekkin'? He did the whole thing, including all the speaking voices, which was funny enough, but did it in a falsetto voice (as the eveing wore on, we realised that that was how he sang normally).
I guess you had to be there, but it was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time (especially when we realised that he was being deadly serious).

A mate of mine when he was playing at an indian reservation in canada got a request for Slow motion walter Any guesses to what song the guy was after??? Well none of the band could figure out what he was on about so the lead singer asked him to sing a bit of it . The song turned out to be Smoke on the water. Maybe thats what he said but the accent put them off.True story apparently!!!

A few years ago, when I was doing a residency at a Holiday Complex in Cyprus, I was asked by an elderly Yorkshire couple for "Scooby do" Turned out they wanted Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night" When I'd finally figured out what they meant and played it they bought one of my CD's so it was worth the brain strain.
