What I'm waiting for is the time when we can send robots of ourselves out to do gig and we still get the money Kev, good idea. How does it work, you set up one while the other's playing?

Foot switches for mini disk players? Now this is cool. I have a Sony Mini-disk player but I don't think there's a place for a foot switch.

I'd say it would be rigged up to the play/pause switch ....................handy but could be confusing using two players...you wouldn't want to be downing too many pints or you'd be all over the place.. ........

I've seen duo's using ipods recently!
Personally I prefer the laptop, all my midi files are on it so it's easy to change or create a new set list on the night.

Must be an Aussie thing, I'm with John. I've used every type of system over the years but a well-set-up laptop wins hands down. I've seen a few other acts using various systems at gigs and watching someone shuffle floppy or MD disks between songs just makes me smile. I prefer a system that allows me concentrate on the audience and performance, not the set-list.

Theres a few acts using laptops in some of the venues around here ( with lyrics on the screen...Karaoke? ) and I just dont like the setup at all...its just my opinion but I dont think a laptop looks as professional as a well mounted rack.....(and Ive seen some of them on nights as well lolol )...just my opinion....not taking a snipe at anyone.....MD's work for me and I'm happy with it

Shanless, I would love to know what players you use (with foot switch's) I use a couple of Sony's, I have no problem with the machines, and they are great for editing,But I still have to take my hand from the guitar to select a particular track........Pete.

I think you must have misunderstood something, Shyam. We're not talking about air guitars. We're playing our guitars and keys etc, we're just using the laptops to supply the rest of the band; drums, bass, brass, strings etc. You're probably using the midi-player in your keyboard? Same thing. BTW, Shanless, I take your point about having the lyrics on the laptop, it may look a bit karaoke, but seriously mate, it's just good utilisation of 21st Century technology. We have a repertoire of well over 600 songs and some of them we only play once or twice a year. My missus used to lug an enormous lyric book that was starting to resemble the Encyclopedia Britannica! I got fed up with seeing this huge folder on a music stand so I loaded all the tricky lyrics into the laptop... voila... welcome to the 21st Century. No more flipping through pages, no more "lost" lyrics. I don't see any difference in using this or the ever-present lyric sheets we see at other's gigs except that I'm no longer getting a hernia from carrying her books! I'm not griping or anything, I'm just expressing my point of view. And just as an afterthought; I'm perfectly happy playing "herbal" ie: just me and the acoustic guitar. We sometimes get to do a whole night just like that; no midi, no laptop, no lyric-sheets, just me on vocals/guitar and the wife on vocals/piano, but apart from a few restaurants with nice in-house pianos, it seems like nobody wants to pay much money for that these days. Cheers, Dave

I take exception to your remarks shy........I DO play guitar...but unlike your keyboard...I cant get it to play bass and drums for me...............and if I may say so....my performances are slick and professional

Good point! Freeway, if you're looking for a cheapie, how about the Roland Sound Brush, no sounds just a player? This is old tech, one of the original Midifile players. I found one on Ebay for US$71 in 30 seconds. Kawai has an oldie but goodie called the Q80EX (make sure it's the EX which will play SMF, the earlier model, Q80, will only play Kawai formatted sequences). If you need on-board sound you need something like the Roland sd35 or one of the newer players like Oki. Have you considered using a cheapo laptop? Easy and relatively cheap.
